Germany great Philipp Lahm has labelled France as the favourites for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, set to be hosted in Germany.

Les Bleus lost 2-0 to Germany in a friendly on Saturday in a match that perhaps sent some alarm bells ringing. Didier Deschamps will be looking to see a response from his side against Chile on Tuesday. However, Lahm is not showing any concern for France, who reached the final of the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Lahm hoping for a surprise package

The former Bayern Munich defender has backed France to go one better than they did in 2016 by winning the Euros later this year. “France [are the favourites]. Quite simply because they have, I’d say, 40 players that are very talented. They have a very balanced group and can easily make changes, bring players off the bench that could legitimately start, but what is the most important is to be a team on the pitch,” he told the AFP.

Lahm, the president of the organisation of the Euros, also predicted that “the big European footballing nations” will be best placed to win the tournament this summer, however, he would also like there to be “a surprise team” as Iceland were during the Euros in 2016, which was ultimately won by Portugal, who defeated Les Bleus in the final in Paris. The tournament runs from 14th June until 14th July.
