The Philadelphia Union have re-signed leftback Kai Wagner ahead of the 2024 MLS season. The 26 year old Wagner will return to the club through the 2026 MLS season with an option for the 2027 season. The 2024 season will be Wagner’s 6th MLS season with the Union. Prior to Philly, Wagner was playing in Germany’s 3.Liga with Wurzburger Kickers. Wagner has played 284 career games between the Union, Wurzburger Kickers, SSV Ulm, and Schalke 04 II. During those games, he has scored 8 goals as well as assisting on another 43. Wagner won the MLS Supporters' Shield with Philadelphia during the 2020 season. He was also named to the MLS Best XI in 2022 as well as an All Star in 2021 and 2022.

Wagner’s return to the Union can’t be chatted about without acknowledging the fact that he will miss some action to start the 2024 MLS season due to suspension. Wagner was suspended during the Union’s 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs after an alleged incident regarding him making a racial slur towards a member of the New England Revolution. Off the field, Wagner and the Union have some things to work on. Obviously, on the field we know what he is going to bring. He will be a top caliber player, but we need to acknowledge the off the field stuff as well.
