Chucky Lozano's latest injury absence may be shorter than some feared, though he seems unlikely to feature in Wednesday night's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps as MLS play resumes.
Lozano hit the injury shelf for the second time this season after he was forced to leave in the 65th minute of San Diego's 2-0 victory over Austin FC on May 31.
He has officially been upgraded to questionable for Wednesday's match on the MLS Player Status Report for Matchday 20. But with two games coming in the next four days, Mikey Varas suggested it was more likely the former Mexico national team star would feature on the weekend against FC Dallas.
"He's looking really good," Varas told reporters. "He would’ve been available for Vancouver, but we had the CBA break, so we just out of precaution and making sure, thinking long term, he’ll be available for Dallas. "
Lozano, who turns 30 next month, has five goals and seven assists in 14 appearances. And although he was San Diego's first MLS signing, Varas has been fortunate not to have to lean as heavily on him as some may have expected when the season started.
With eight goals and nine assists, Anders Dreyer is making a genuine MVP bid, and five San Diego players have scored at least three times through 18 matches.
Philadelphia's injury list has grown lengthier, with fullbacks Frankie Westfield out (ankle) and Olivier Mbaizo questionable (adductor) for their tricky trip to face Gregg Berhalter's Chicago Fire.
Those ailments leave the Union without three outside backs, given Nathan Harriel remains away with the U.S. men's national team.
Elsewhere on the pitch, striker Mikael Uhre and defender Ian Glavinovich remain injured. Striker Tai Baribo still has finally departed his native Israel amid geopolitical issues but isn't fit for action. And goalkeeper Andre Blake and midfielder Quinn Sullivan are also at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
The first-place Union are unbeaten in 10 matches in MLS and 12 across all competitions.
