The Red Dragons have enjoyed a fantastic start to life in the third tier on the whole, as they currently sit second in the table following back-to-back promotions.

However, they have stuttered somewhat recently, picking up just four points from their past four games, which includes the defeat at Stevenage.

Phil Parkinson highlights Wrexham problem

A 10th minute goal from Louis Thompson was enough to condemn Wrexham to their second loss of the campaign, on what was a frustrating night for the Welsh side.

Parkinson’s men failed to have a shot on target in the first half, and whilst they had more control of the ball after the break, they again failed to test the keeper enough as they tried to salvage a point.

And, speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, the experienced boss couldn’t hide his disappointment at how the first half played out following the early goal.

First 10 minutes, I thought we passed the ball well and we carried on from the weekend, where we finished the game well and had more control.

The goal knocked us too much. We kind of wasted the last 35 minutes of the first half because we didn’t work hard enough to play, we then became second best in the duels. Obviously, the goal gave them a huge lift but our game management in that period wasn’t what it needed to be.

We know goals lift teams but it just knocked us too much. You’re going to concede goals. We haven’t conceded a lot this season, but you’re going to concede. When you do, we have to respond better than we did today.

Goals, they always knock teams, we know that, but I just felt it jolted us too much.”

Wrexham have the mentality to bounce back

Whilst Parkinson has questioned the side about their poor display last night, he knows that he has a group that he can rely on.

The majority of the squad have played a part in at least one promotion with Wrexham, so when there have been testing times in the past, they’ve stepped up to help the side get over the line.

So, there won’t be too much concern about the mentality of the group, and the players will know that they simply weren’t at it last night.

With their only other defeat coming at the hands of big-spending Birmingham, this was a reminder to the group that they can’t let their standards slip, as there are still good teams in the league who will punish you if you aren’t at it.

Next, Wrexham welcome struggling Northampton Town to the Racecourse Ground as they look to go into the October international break on a high, and they will take confidence from the fact they have a 100% record on their own patch this season in the league.
