PFA ready to “step in” amidst Manchester United’s shocking treatment of women’s team | OneFootball

The Professional Footballers’ Association are reportedly prepared to intervene in an attempt to address Manchester United’s shocking treatment of their women’s team.

It recently emerged that United made the decision to move the women’s team into portable buildings at the club’s Carrington training complex this season to allow the men’s squad to utilize the women’s facilities while their own area is undergoing a revamp.

United have already started work on an ambitious £50m investment intended to modernise the men’s first team building at the club’s training complex.

Earlier this month, the Red Devils announced plans to transform Carrington into a “world-class football ­facility with a positive culture to support future success.” Construction works are projected to last the entirety of the 2024/25 term.

ESPN reported that United’s move to prioritise the men’s team by moving Marc Skinner’s side left the women’s first-team stars disappointed.

The portable buildings are expected to contain amenities including changing rooms, team meeting rooms, office spaces and communal areas for the women’s players and staff.

The Athletic have given a crucial update on the troubling situation.

According to the newspaper, “The Professional Footballers’ Association are ready to seek conversations with Manchester United after being made aware of growing discontent regarding the club’s management of their women’s team.”

“This is the second time in three years that the PFA have been made aware of concerns by United’s women’s team, after members of the team previously approached the PFA for support in trying to improve conditions at the club in 2021.”

“The PFA did not comment when approached by The Athletic but sources close to the situation, who chose to speak anonymously due to the sensitivity of the discussions, told The Athletic that the PFA — the trade union for footballers — are now prepared to step in on behalf of United players amid concerns about the environment.”

Adam Crafton notes that United initially considered temporarily relocating teams to an alternative facility to ease pressure at Carrington but this option was soon discarded due to performance concerns.

The club is also adamant that the resources at Carrington are of significantly higher quality than anywhere else.

This comes off the back of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent admission that INEOS currently don’t have a clear plan in place for the women’s team.

It’s unsurprising that the FA Cup winners are undergoing a mass exodus of key players, who are all undoubtedly fed up with the pitiful state of affairs.

The exits of captain Katie Zelem and Spaniard Lucia Garcia have already been confirmed. There is also an expectation that goalkeeper Mary Earps will complete a switch to Paris Saint-Germain very soon.
