Peterborough United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris has turned down an improved offer from Charlton Athletic, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season with Peterborough and the club are looking to cash in on him this month instead of losing him for free in the summer.

Jonson Clarke-Harris rejects Charlton's offer

With the striker's contract up in the summer, Clarke-Harris may believe that he's better off winding down his contract at London Road and waiting until he's a free agent, so he can choose which club he joins in the summer.

However, it's understandable why Peterborough don't want him doing that, with the club having agreed a fee of over £500k with Charlton, money they'll lose out on if he leaves on a free transfer in the summer.

Posh's director of football, Barry Fry issued a warning to the player.

He told the Peterborough Telegraph: "Johnno has turned down two contract offers from Charlton.

"It’s up to him of course, but he isn’t going to get a better offer or a better club in my opinion.

"He could believe he will be financially better off if he leaves for nothing in the summer, but clubs are struggling financially and with financial fair play rules.

"Two Premier League clubs got charged yesterday and I know of half a dozen Championship clubs who are struggling to stay within the rules. The money isn’t there anymore.”

Charlton are keen to bring the prolific striker to the club as they look to move up the league, currently finding themselves in 13th place and 16 points away from the play-off places.

However, the Addicks aren't the only club who have been linked with the Jamaican international, with super-rich League Two side Wrexham interested earlier this month, according to The Sun.

While Gillingham and Fleetwood Town were linked with the striker by the Peterborough Telegraph.

Jonson Clarke-Harris' 2023/24 season

It's been a difficult season for Clarke-Harris given his lofty standards, and he's actually found himself out of the Peterborough side in recent weeks.

However, this won't put any potential buyers off, with the striker showing his capabilities last season, bagging 29 goals in all competitions for The Posh as they reached the play-off semi-finals.

He's also shown what he can do at Championship level, scoring 12 times in 41 appearances for the club during the 2021/22 season as Peterborough were relegated.

The striker has played 24 times in all competitions this season, bagging 10 goals, which is still a very healthy return. However, he's been left out of the squad for the club's last three games, which shows that the club are desperate to get him to leave this month.

If anyone needed any reminding about his goalscoring ability, he scored twice on the 29th December in a draw against Barnsley, in what was his last appearance.

It's set to be a difficult couple of weeks for all involved, with Peterborough and Clarke-Harris both wanting different things. The club will be hoping Charlton can agree personal terms that meet the player's demands so that they don't lose their star striker for free in the summer.
