Despite his pre-match claims that Tottenham can’t compete in the EFL Cup this season, José Mourinho watched his side overcome Chelsea to stay in with a chance at lifting the trophy.

It took a tense penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw to decide it, with Spurs ultimately winning 5-4 on spot-kicks, having scored with each of their attempts.

Both managers were amusingly at each other’s throats on the touchline in the first half on more than one occasion, with the only other highlight of that period being the opening goal.

He did almost make amends after the break but it was fellow debutant Mendy who denied him with an excellent save to tip over his blistering drive.

However, he was helpless when poor Emerson defending six minutes from time allowed Erik Lamela to level and send the contest to penalties.

After Spurs scored all of their five penalties, Mason Mount missed the crucial kick as Mourinho finally overcame Frank Lampard at the fourth attempt in his career.
