Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Paul Pogba would be leaving Manchester United on a free transfer once again, this time six years after sensationally returning to the club in 2016.

The 29-year-old has been followed by constant rumours over the last four years but after it became clear that leaving on a free transfer became an option, rumours of a move to Manchester City started surfacing.

Last month, there were suggestions that Pogba had rejected a move to the Etihad Stadium over fears that he would become a scapegoat for United fans. Now, there is further clarity on the supposed talks with Manchester City.

According to The Athletic, Pogba met with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to discuss a move across town this summer, with the Spanish manager said to be explaining in detail why he would like the Frenchman to join.

Talks even went as far as to contract negotiations, with Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, making a contract proposal for Pogba to consider.

Ultimately, Pogba rejected the chance to join Guardiola’s side and is now believed to be on the verge of making a return to Juventus.

SN’s verdict… Pogba’s relationship with Manchester United fans was broken long before rumours of a supposed move to City started circulating on social media but the forbidden transfer across town could have been very damaging.

Players don’t move between the Manchester clubs often and there’s a reason for it, with Carlos Tevez’s infamous switch in 2009 being the prime example.

Pogba’s six-year stay at Old Trafford has been disastrous and most fans will be delighted to see the back of him.
