Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba could now sign a new contract at the club following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, according to The Athletic.

What's the latest Manchester United news?

After a statement summer transfer window that saw a side to have finished second last season add, Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho to the squad, the feeling of momentum appears to have spread to Pogba too.

Indeed, while agent Mino Raiola had previously suggested the Frenchman's time at Old Trafford would soon be up after a divisive second stint at the club, Pogba is now believed to be leaning towards extending his stay.

The arrivals of new players - particularly Ronaldo - as well as the lack of movement from the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are believed to play into his thinking.

The situation could yet change again, although talks are expected to resume shortly, and there is a general feeling of optimism the 28-year-old could stay.

For their part, United are said to be drawing up contingency plans just in case.

How well has Pogba played this season?

Already, Pogba looks to have gone up a level.

Clearly, these are early days, but seven assists in four games have already surpassed his overall tally for the last two seasons combined.

Furthermore, the 2.5 key passes he's supplying on a per-game basis (via WhoScored) is the highest average he's managed over the course of his recorded career thus far. Alongside Bruno Fernandes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer boasts quite the midfield.

How important is it Pogba stays at Man Utd?

On this form, hugely.

Although much of the criticism he's endured since his 2016 move from Juventus has been unfair, few would doubt that Pogba hasn't always convinced, with constant debates in regards to his best position one of the major narratives.

As frustrating as he can be at times, however, the up-side to having him in the team has been painstakingly obvious this season.

Out of contract next summer, watching him walk away for free again would be gutting after paying what was a world record £89m for him five years ago.

What has been said about Paul Pobga and Man Utd?

Speaking on his YouTube channel last month, United legend Rio Ferdinand revealed Pogba was keen to win major trophies and hinted that, if he felt he could at Old Trafford, there is a chance he would stay.

"It could be his last season if he [Pogba] doesn't re-sign and it looks like it is going that way a little bit," he said.

"But if he smells success, and a winning period, there is something telling me that he will want to be a part of it.

"That is all he has come for. When I speak to Paul, all he talks about is wanting to win.

"[He says] 'I want to win the Champions League. The Premier League is what I want to win'.

"He has got a burning desire to do that for Manchester United. He grew up here as a kid.
