Back in the summer of 2017, Liverpool signed Dominic Solanke from Chelsea on a free transfer.

The forward did not even last two years at Anfield. Liverpool ended up selling Solanke to Bournemouth for a transfer fee of €21.20 million during the 2019 January transfer window.

Pundit Paul Merson has recently been talking about the former Red. The 53-year-old believes that Solanke is too good for the Championship.

“I think he is too good for this league,” Merson told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (14/09/21 at 7:30 pm). “I think this helps him. Scoring goals here gives him confidence. Then you can move back into the Premier League.

“I think when he went into the Premier League. I think he struggled. But this will give him confidence. Then when he does move up, it’s not going to be easy. We see that with Toney. You don’t get a lot of chances.

“You are playing in the Championship, your team are getting 12 chances a game and you have got a brace, then it adds up and you get 30 odd goals.

“You get to the Premier League, you are standing up front, you get one chance and you have to be cold – he got behind the eight-ball at Liverpool. Too many good players ahead of him.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Solanke has had a good start to the 2021-22 campaign. The striker has scored five goals in seven Championship appearances for the Cherries.

Therefore, perhaps Merson is correct about Solanke being too good for the Championship. However, we do believe that Liverpool made the right call by moving the Englishman on.

Solanke only found the back of the net once in 27 appearances for the club’s first-team. Also, the 24-year-old was behind the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the pecking order. Therefore, Solanke’s opportunities at Anfield were limited.
