Paul Heckingbottom has confirmed that an ankle injury was a concern for Billy Sharp during his return to action this weekend.

It was Sharp’s first start since March 19 for Sheffield United, but the veteran forward could only manage 45 minutes before being taken off at half time.

The 36-year old will be assessed on Monday before the extent of his injury will be known.

The Blades earned a 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough, but the United manager is concerned with the current pile up of injuries within the squad, with Ben Osborn also a concern following the weekend’s trip to the Riverside.

The 45-year old confirmed that the club will need to wait before confirming the length of Sharp’s potential absence.

“Bill’s done his ankle. He was limping and we tried to strap it, but we can’t get a break with that [injuries],” said Heckingbottom, via The Yorkshire Post.

“Ozzy [Ben Osborn] did his ankle the other day when we’re trying to manage him and we’re getting niggles we don’t need.

“Fingers crossed, Bill’s not too bad but we won’t know until he settles down.”

United were twice in the lead on Sunday before being pegged back in the 82nd minute by Chuba Akpom to earn the hosts a point.

Sander Berge continued his good form with a 3rd minute goal to put Heckingbottom’s side in front, with a Ryan Giles own goal then making it 2-1 on 68 minutes following Akpom’s 14th minute equaliser.

Up next for United is the visit of Sunderland to Bramall Lane on August 17.

The Verdict

Sharp’s injury concerns could become a big problem for United’s season, given his importance to the squad in the last 12 months.

The striker is a great presence to have around the club but perhaps can no longer be relied upon to compete in every game.

He showed in the opening 45 minutes that he is still more than capable of performing well in the Championship.
