Clermont Foot’s manager Pascal Gastien has been left in a unique position as his side struggles at the bottom of the table.

The club for the past few weeks have been searching for his replacement, and have landed on the Red Star assistant Sébastian Bichard. For the last week, Clermont and Red Star have started discussions over financial compensation for the assistant.

L’Équipe reports that the two clubs are no closer to coming to an agreement as Red Star remain reluctant to release a highly valued employee.

Gastien has been clear that he wants to remain at Clermont’s helm until the end of the season, but his status as manager has been increasingly undermined by the actions of the club as they search for his replacement.

This came to a head in a training session earlier this week, when Gastien and Maximiliano Caufriez (27) clashed. L’Équipe states, the Belgian defender became annoyed by Gastien’s comments during an exercise.

Caufriez criticised the manager for his responsibility in the club’s current record at the bottom of the table and then refused to complete the training session.
