Park Ji-sung became a cult hero at Manchester United during his seven-season stint at the club.

Making 205 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson, Park won four Premier League titles and the 2007/08 Champions League at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, before departing for a short spell at Queens Park Rangers in 2012.

More than a decade has now passed since his Old Trafford exit, but the 100-cap South Korea international still carries the Red Devils in his heart.

His enduring passion for the club was explained by his wife, Kim Min-ji, during a recent radio interview, when speaking about her husband’s reaction to finding out that United had defeated Liverpool in the Premier League last month.

Heading into the home fixture against the Reds, United had suffered a pair of defeats (to Brighton and Brentford) in their opening two Premier League games of the season.

The 13-time Premier League champions desperately needed a positive result against Liverpool to kickstart their campaign, but many supporters went into the match against Jurgen Klopp’s side fearing the worst.

Exceeding all expectations, United pulled off a shock 2-1 victory on the night – thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

Due to the time difference in South Korea – where Park now works as an advisor for K-League side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors – he was dropping off his children at school when the result was confirmed.

His wife recalled the wave of emotion that came over her husband when the result was confirmed.

“We were dropping kids off in an elevator and then he suddenly goes [gasping noise]. I’ve never seen him getting this excited for anything. So I asked him ‘what happened?!’ Then he goes ‘we [United] actually won!'”

She was then asked whether Park was more excited for United’s victory than he was for South Korea’s monumental upset of Germany at the 2018 World Cup.

Indicating that the Liverpool win had meant more to him, she declared: “[It was] not even comparable.”

You can check out a subtitled clip of the interview below – which shows Park beaming from ear-to-ear at the story.
