Pape Gueye sets conditions for Marseille renewal

Pape Gueye (25) rejected a contract extension at Olympique de Marseille earlier this season. The falling out between the player and the club was public and OM were desperate to cash in on the Senegalese midfielder in January, fearing losing him on a free transfer.

However, are there now signs of a rapprochement? Whilst Gueye’s departure at the end of the season had seemed a nigh-on certainty, speaking after a 2-1 victory over RC Lens on Sunday, he set the conditions for remaining at the club. “[Me remaining] will depend on lots of things. My priority is game time and being respected as an important player. If I get that, there is no problem and I’ll stay,” Gueye told reporters in the mixed zone.

Gueye targeted by Burnley and Monaco

It is reported that Gueye considered Marseille’s contract renewal offer unsatisfactory. His refusal to sign saw him banished from the first-team picture, however, he was re-integrated upon the request of interim manager Jean-Louis Gasset, who amidst an injury crisis stated that he wanted the maximum amount of players available for selection.

Since Gasset’s arrival, Gueye has started six of the last eight games and he scored his first of the season during the victory over Lens. Post-match, Gueye dedicated his goal to Gasset, however, the former Ivory Coast manager will not be at Marseille either. Burnley and AS Monaco target Gueye may not be either but his latest comments offer room for a reconciliation and a renewal.
