Wrexham have been urged to move on Billy Waters from the first team squad this summer.

The Red Dragons are preparing for life in League One after gaining promotion to the third division with a second place finish in League Two last year.

Back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson have seen Wrexham enjoy a rapid rise up the English football pyramid.

The club have not competed at this level since 2005, so will view the summer window as a chance to make the necessary improvements for the step up in standard between leagues.

This could mean some players have to make way in order to fund new additions and find space in the squad.

FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice has claimed that someone like Billy Waters should be moved on this summer.

While he feels the 29-year-old deserves another chance to prove himself in League Two, he believes that his lack of game time is an indication he’s not ready for League One.

“I think there’s a few players that Parkinson and the management staff should be looking to move on this summer, to be completely honest with you,” Grice told Football League World.

“I thought that last summer, and they stuck around.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think our squad is full of quality, but I think players like Billy Waters, who to be fair to him hasn’t got a chance in this Wrexham side to prove his quality after signing from Halifax.

“He just hasn’t necessarily shown in his limited game time that he has the quality to maybe step up to League Two, never mind League One.

“I think he went on loan at the back end of last season and performed okay, so he could definitely have another crack at League Two.”

Billy Waters' lack of Wrexham game time

Waters spent the final months of last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers, where he made 11 league appearances for the side on their way to a fifth place finish in the table (all stats from Fbref).

The forward had played just three times in League Two for Wrexham prior to the March move.

He made the switch to Wrexham in 2023, but has featured just four times in the league for Parkinson’s side in that time.

Waters has a contract with the League One side until next summer.

Back-to-back promotions requires ruthless Wrexham decisions

Squad players that were bit-part members of the team when promotion from the National League was earned will struggle for game time in League One.

Waters wasn’t able to convince Parkinson to give him game time in either of the two lower divisions, so it’s unlikely he’ll be part of their plans next season.

It is these kinds of players that Wrexham need to be ruthless about getting rid of, as their quick rise has seen them move past the need for them in a short space of time.

The Welsh outfit need League One quality players next year, and shedding this weight off their wage bill will help, even if only a little.
