France took their first big step towards Euro 2024 qualification with a dominant victory over the Dutch in Paris.
Here is what we made of the proceedings.
The rumors suggesting Antoine Griezmann was an unhappy camper this week after being snubbed for the captaincy of the French national team for Kylian Mbappé appears to have been just a bit played up.
The pair showed their partnership was left undamaged in the opening three minutes against the dutch, as Kylian found Antoine for a superb goal to kick off the qualifying campaign.
If the French are to recapture silverware in 2024, Griezmann and Mbappé will have to lead from the front as captain and vice-captain.
A goal almost right from the kick-off is surely the perfect way to start that journey!
After a decent showing in the 2022 World Cup for the Dutch, a 4-0 thumping to kick off Euro 2024 qualifying is far from ideal.
Despite many praising the KNVB’s decision to bring back Ronald Koeman as manager, tonight’s defeat in Paris was a stark reminder that going back to your ex doesn’t tend to work out.
Of course, there is still plenty of time for the Dutch to turn things around with a very talented squad. But should they have any aspirations to reclaim their spot at the table with Europe’s elite footballing nations, they will have to compete with the likes of the French.
After some controversial decisions in squad selection heading into the opening round of qualifying, Koeman could have a lot of questions to answer.
What is there to say about Kylian Mbappé that hasn’t been said already? The guy is absolute dynamite.
Days after being handed the armband at just 24-years-old, the PSG man strutted his stuff once again, snatching two goals in France’s dominant win. The second of which was a yet another milestone for the forward.
As if back-to-back World Cup final appearances is not enough, the early indications point to France being the favorites for the European Championships in 2024.
With Mbappé at the helm, Didier Deschamps’ men could be set for an era of domination rarely seen in international football before.
