Former Argentine international Luis Galván has died at the age of 77, the South American country’s football association AFA has reported.

Galván was part of the team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1978, sealing glory in the final with a 3-1 victory after extra time over the Netherlands team.

Local media reported that Galván had been in hospital for several weeks with pneumonia. “The AFA and its entire board express their sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time,” the football association wrote.

Galván formed a central duo with captain Daniel Passarella at the World Cup. He also took part in the 1982 tournament in Spain, where Diego Maradona played his first final tournament for his country, and made 34 appearances. Galván played for Talleres in Argentina for almost his entire career.
