Gift of the Gab

What a signing for Arsenal Gabriel Jesus could turn out to be.

The Brazilian striker opened his account for the Gunners in some style today, scoring twice in the first-half as he endeared himself in the best possible way to his new supporters.

His first goal was the work of pure technique, somehow finding space in a crowded penalty area to curl the ball into the far top corner to send half the Emirates into raptures while the other half stood open-mouthed at what they’d just witnessed.

Jesus then found himself in the right position to head Gabriel Martinelli’s corner home at the back post in what was a true poacher’s finish.

The 25-year-old spurned a number of chances to complete his hat-trick but there was nothing that could take away from what was the perfect home debut. His quick and instinctive thinking led to him poking the ball into the path of Granit Xhaka to tap home the third, proving his all-round game capabilities.

Mikel Arteta’s summer signing has now equalled Alexandre Lacazette’s non-penalty goal return from last season already.

Arsenal have a real centre-forward on their hands. The supporters have a new hero to worship.

Mentality monsters

Much has been made of Arteta’s attempts to prepare his side for the trip to Anfield in scenes that have come out of the recent All or Nothing Amazon documentary series.

If you’re none the wiser, the Spaniard has his players train while speakers surround them play out the Liverpool FC anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ in an attempt to have an effect on his team’s mentality ahead of playing in a hostile atmosphere.

We only see one snapshot of Arteta’s ploys to improve the mind of his players, and although this plan didn’t play out how he would’ve wanted, it’s fair to say whatever he has done since looks to be having the desired effect.

Arsenal conceded twice today, laying the groundwork for the stadium and team to get nervous, anxious and edgy.

Instead, on both occasions they only went and scored straight away to re-assert their dominance and authority on the match.

Arsenal’s mettle was questioned a lot last season, especially considering the way they let a top-four place slip out of their grasps.

Today was a sign that progress may have been made.

Foxes led astray

It all feels a bit stale on and off the pitch at Leicester at the moment.

The only transfer business in or out that has occurred was the departure of club legend Kasper Schmeichel to OGC Nice and it was evident that the Foxes felt the loss of the Dane today.

Danny Ward is a more than capable international goalkeeper but his error for Xhaka’s goal took the game away from his side at a time where they’d just got back into it.

But while Schmeichel could also have made that error, the real blow was losing the 35-year-old’s voice and leadership at the back.

Leicester’s three-man defence looked shaky and all over the place every time the hosts came forward and although Ward produced some solid saves, the commanding presence of Schmeichel was sorely missed.

Brendan Rodgers will hope his board will get to work in the market in the coming weeks.
