Manchester City’s rising star Oscar Bobb has been left stunned by recent comparisons to an all-time great at the Etihad Stadium, following stellar performances in the USA.

The Norwegian winger has been arguably the stand-out performer for Manchester City in the United States thus far in their pre-season tour, recording three assists and a goal in the two outings seen against Celtic and AC Milan.

Combining to great effect with Erling Haaland, Bobb’s start to the 2024/25 season will come as a significant warning to those who are yet to get their pre-season training underway, namely wide-position rivals Jeremy Doku and Savinho.

Such has been the standard of the 21-year-old’s performances Stateside that some fans have already made some remarkable comparisons between Oscar Bobb and some of the best players to grace the wide role at Manchester City.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Oscar Bobb was made aware of recent comparisons amongst Manchester City fans and reporters to Algerian football legend and Etihad Stadium icon, Riyad Mahrez.

“Woah – that’s a big compliment. I’ll take it of course,” Bobb reacted. “I’ve been watching all the (Manchester) City games for the last 10 years – so if you say so geez, then I’ll take it,” he continued, before pointing out who is inspiration is within the City squad.

“For me it’s always Bernardo (Silva) – I always look at him – I try to emulate some parts of his game – but do my own thing as well. I liked watching the best dribblers as a kid, the best attacking players.”

Oscar Bobb went on to reveal, “I watched a lot of Barcelona when the manager was there – all the players he had. Messi, Iniesta. We had La Liga at home so I watched all the Barca games together with my mum.”

With two matches remaining in Manchester City’s pre-season tour, against Barcelona and Chelsea this week, Oscar Bobb will be optimistic of playing an integral part in both contests and staking a serious claim for a starting role in Pep Guardiola’s plans this season.

There remains a chance that Bobb could start for Manchester City in the club’s opening competitive game of the forthcoming season, with Manchester United the opponents in the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

The large majority Guardiola’s first-team squad, including wide stars Doku and Savinho, are set to report back for training at the City Football Academy on August 5, although it remains to be seen whether the players will be deemed fit enough to start against Erik ten Hag’s men.
