Form

Sheffield United have won four of their 11 matches in the first half of the FA Women’s Championship, with victories over Reading (3-1) at the Madejski Stadium, Lewes (1-0), London City Lionesses (3-1) and Watford (3-1). Despite picking up five losses so far this campaign, they have only loss by the odd goal in four of those where they could have got some reward. The Blades ended 2023 with a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic, being pegged back on two occasions, including a 98th minute equaliser by The Addicks’ Kiera Skeels.

Players to watch

Isobel Goodwin has been one of the standout players for Sheffield United this season. A highly-rated forward, Goodwin is currently the club’s leading goalscorer this season, netting 10 goals in all competitions – seven of those in the FA Women’s Championship and is joint-second in the league. Fellow forward Jess Sigsworth has plenty of experience at the top level, playing for Doncaster Rovers Belles (2011-2013 & 2016-2018), Notts County (2015) Manchester United (2018-2021) and Leicester City (2021-2023) in the WSL, racking up an impressive 117 appearances and scoring 41 goals. Sophie Barker wears the captain’s armband for The Blades after making her move permanent in the summer, originally, on loan during last season. Another player that has WSL experience on her CV, most recently, at Leicester City where she helped the club to promotion to the top level in 2020.

Manager – Jonathan Morgan

Morgan’s first managerial job came at Leicester City, originally starting as the reserve team manager before taking charge of the senior team in 2014, where he spent seven years with the Foxes and guided them to promotion to the WSL in 2021 and was named LMA Manager of the Year. He became the head coach of FA Women’s National League Northern Division Premier side, Burnley Women, in May, 2022, before taking over the managerial reins at Sheffield United in February, 2023.

Last time we met

We met The Blades in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup in 2021, which saw us confirm back-to-back appearances in the quarter-final at the time. Lucy Quinn handed us the lead at the Hive, who unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner of the net, but that was cancelled out by Lucy Watson with 10 minutes of normal time remaining as she charged down a clearance and slotted the ball into an empty net from a tight angle. Kit Graham netted the winner in extra-time, latching onto Jess Naz’s cross with a pinpoint header.
