Recruitment at Burnley has been spot-on during this January transfer window thus far, following on from what was a fantastic summer.

Of course, there was the potential for things to progress quite slowly this season, with a relatively inexperienced manager in Vincent Kompany coming in, whilst the sheer number of senior figures departing made it difficult to fully predict how the 22/23 campaign would pan out.

This window has been an interesting one as they have obviously been recruiting to ensure automatic promotion is sealed but it is evident that they have a potential Premier League return in the back of their minds.

As intelligent and as proactive as they have been in the last couple of windows, they will be hoping that the final few days run as smoothly as possible.

To end the month on a high, they need to avoid making a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence, with the Clarets being credited with an interest in the young full-back.

As per a report from 90min.com, the Clarets are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old who was outstanding in the Championship last time out with Nottingham Forest.

There is no denying that Spence is an exciting talent who could thrive at Burnley but that does not mean a move should be sanctioned.

How many points did Burnley amass during their title-winning 2015/16 Championship campaign?

Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham have also been mentioned in association with the flying full-back and there are a couple of reasons why Burnley should avoid strengthening their interest.

Firstly, competition levels in the right-back position are already at an extremely high level and adding Spence would complicate the situation and would force two very good right-backs to miss out.

Ultimately, this could be Spence missing out if Conor Roberts or Vitnho are displaying good form, as they both have done this season.

Whilst the Premier League is a step up in quality, you cannot help but feel that Spence would be in closer proximity to starting games at the other four clubs.

The second reason why a Turf Moor loan move would make little sense is that the Clarets operate with a solid back four, and whilst these full-backs have lots of attacking responsibilities, the 22-year-old is much better suited to the right-wing-back position.

Whilst a massive threat in an attacking capacity last time out for Forest, questions were raised about his positioning at various points during the campaign.

If an opportunity to permanently sign Spence came about, it would be worth considering given the incredibly high ceiling he possesses but adding him on loan would be a strange move.
