The international break is ancient history and club football has returned to the top of the charts.

But some big names have slipped in our latest rankings as the season of the dark horse rolls on.

10. Southampton (👎 Last week: 8)

Saints’ fine start to the season went on as they took a point from Wolves on Monday night. They even look dangerous without Danny Ings, largely thanks to Theo Walcott, who has hit he ground running.

Hard to beat, good going forward, decent at the back. Ralph Hasenhüttl is creating something special.

We couldn’t overlook BVB much longer, could we? They bounced right back from defeat to Bayern Munich to smash Hertha BSC and Brugge in the space of a few days.

They have a superstar in Erling Haaland but he isn’t alone as they’re scoring for fun and have also kept nine clean sheets in 13 games so far this season. Title race? Champions League dark horses? Maybe.

8. Roma (👍  Last week: 10)

We’re all talking about Milan, some people have started talking about Sassuolo, but nobody is really talking about Roma. And that’ll suit them just fine.

The capital club are now seven without defeat in Italy and have won three in a row thanks to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s stunning run of form. Next up is a trip to Naples, where the Giallorossi can underline their credentials in a wide open Serie A title race.

7. Ajax (no change)

Ajax are on fire in the Eredivisie and possibly on course to advance from an incredibly tough Champions League group.

Scoring for fun (37 in nine league matches), two European wins over Midtjylland could mean another appearances in the knockout stages after a slow start in the group stage.

Erik ten Hag’s side are not as talked about as they were a couple of years ago, at least not outside of the Netherlands, but that suits them just fine.

6. Chelsea (🆕)

Who doubted Frank Lampard and his ability to coach a defence? Actually, we all did.

But here we are, tucking into some humble pie. Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy have helped the Blues stabilise at the back, while Hakim Ziyech is shining further forward. He’s not the only one, with the attack starting to gel, and Chelsea suddenly look like they mean business, both in the Premier League (seven without defeat) and Champions League (already qualified for the last 16).

5. Liverpool (👎 Last week: 4)

A big win against Leicester, then a humbling defeat to Atalanta, albeit with a rotated side.

The injury pile-up and a perfect Champions League record saw Jürgen Klopp rotate and he paid the price. Liverpool still look pretty formidable but they’ll have to get back on track at the weekend to avoid sinking even lower.

4. Bayern Munich (👎 Last week: 1)

Bayern Munich look a little more fragile right now with Joshua Kimmich out injured. Werder Bremen deservedly drew at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, and RB Salzburg were very unlucky not to do the same on Wednesday.

Maybe it’s just a blip but Bayern will hope to improve quickly to avoid losing top spot in the Bundesliga.

3. Milan (No change)

Milan just keep rolling on, with Zlatan Ibrahimović continuing to lead the charge. His brace set the Serie A league leaders up for their impressive 3-1 win at Napoli last weekend.

The Rossoneri continue to threaten going forward and look solid in midfield and defence. It’s quite the combination and they completely deserve to top the table.

2. Tottenham (👍 Last week: 6)

Hands up if you saw this coming. We didn’t either.

Spurs are top of the Premier League and deservedly. Last weekend saw just how dangerous Son Heung-min is again as he scored an early opener in the 2-0 win over Man City, by far Spurs’ best result of the season so far. Next up: Chelsea.

1. Real Sociedad (👍 Last week: 2)

Article image:📊 OneFootball Power Rankings: Two new entries as giants slip up

They win and they win and they win. Real Sociedad are top of LaLiga and they’re there with former Premier League men Nacho Monreal, Mikel Merino, David Silva and Adnan Januzaj all impressing.

Silva is the brains of the operation but Real are proving to be strong all over the pitch. You don’t win six LaLiga games in a row by accident.
