With exactly a year to go until the kick-off of the 2026 World Cup, 13 nations have already booked their place at the tournament - which, for the first time, will feature 48 teams and be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Brazil, who secured qualification last night with a win over Paraguay in Carlo Ancelotti’s first victory in charge, have continued their remarkable record and remain the only country to have taken part in every World Cup.
With the three host nations automatically qualifying, 45 places were up for grabs, and 10 of those have now been claimed.
Three more countries confirmed their spots yesterday: Brazil, helped not only by their win but also by Venezuela’s defeat; Ecuador, who earned a point against Peru to go through; and Australia, who sealed their place earlier with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia.
So far, the qualified nations are: United States (hosts), Canada (hosts), Mexico (hosts), Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador (all South America); Japan, Australia, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Iran, Jordan (all Asia); and New Zealand (Oceania).
That leaves 35 places still to be decided. These are split as follows: 16 for European teams, nine for African nations, three more for South America, three for Central America and the Caribbean, two for Asia, and two more to be decided through intercontinental play-offs.
The next FIFA international windows are set for 1-9 September, 6-14 October, and 10-18 November.
