Judging by the latest reports doing the round today, INEOS chiefs are finally pulling their finger out to get some business done this month.
Heading into the winter window, Manchester United fans were well aware that the club would be operating on a sell-to-buy basis. Now that several players have learned the hard way that they simply don’t fit into Ruben Amorim’s system or plans, opportunities are there to sanction some sales before the February 3 deadline.
The likes of Antony, Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee all face uncertain futures at Old Trafford, despite each of them being nowhere near the end of their contracts in M16. The forwards have struggled to maintain any consistent form, with Rashford now something of an outcast, given that he last featured on December 12.
Casemiro’s sale could raise the funds required to sign Nuno Mendes.
Elsewhere, Casemiro is again being linked with a move after United were unable to find a suitor willing to take him before the season began. It was expected that Saudi Pro League sides would continue their endeavours of signing previously world-class players who are now well past their peak – the Brazilian being a prime example of that – before an agreement failed to materialise.
Better late than never, though. The Telegraph now claims that Al Nassr is considered the ‘most likely destination’ for Casemiro in a transfer that would see him reunite with ex-United and Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo.
In turn, the report adds that the Red Devils are ‘pushing’ to sign left-back Nuno Mendes, who has 18 months left of his Paris Saint-Germain contract and has made it clear he will not be signing an extension.
The Portugal international made 47 appearances under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon before departing for the Ligue 1 giants in a £34 million deal. Having established himself as an integral starter in Paris, Mendes wanted to see his wages increased to accurately reflect the key role he plays, but is yet to see his demands met.
