On 11 December 2000, FIFA chose Real Madrid as the Best Club of the 20th Century. The trophy was presented during the international football governing body's gala in Rome and Alfredo Di Stéfano and Florentino Pérez were in attendance to accept the accolade. Real Madrid won with over 42% of the votes, beating Manchester United and Bayern Munich, the two next best placed teams with 9.69% and 9.18% of the votes respectively.

The award recognised Real Madrid's successes up until that moment in time and the club's significance in the development of football worldwide. Back then, the Whites' trophy cabinet boasted 8 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 2 Copas Latinas, 27 LaLiga titles, 17 Copa del Rey trophies, 5 Spanish Super Cups and 1 Copa de la Liga.
