On this day, Di Stéfano won the Super Ballon d'Or

On 24 December 1989, Alfredo Di Stéfano was awarded the Super Ballon d'Or. France Football paid tribute to the Real Madrid legend's outstanding career, beating Cruyff and Platini in the final vote. The French magazine has only awarded this prize once, making the Saeta Rubia the only footballer to have won this prestigious award in the last 31 years.

The best footballer of all time led Real Madrid to the first five consecutive European Cups and wrote history in the white jersey. During his time as a footballer, he won the Ballon d'Or in 1957 and 1959.
