Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he is unsure regarding the fitness of defender Harry Maguire ahead of the League Cup semi-final first-leg against Manchester City.

Maguire picked up a knock after a challenge on Wolves’ attacker Adama Traore in the opening half of the FA Cup third round tie and it was initially suggested that he could be substituted at the interval.

However, the centre-back was able to play through the entire 90 minutes of the 0-0 draw at the Molineux but speaking after the game, Solskjaer was doubtful over the defender’s involvement in the Manchester derby.

“I don’t know. We were close to taking him off at half-time, but he battled through. Let’s see how he recovers. We hope so. He struggled a little bit but let’s see how he’ll recover. It’s not many days, it’s Sunday, Monday and then we go again Tuesday,” he told.

Earlier this week, Solskjaer confirmed that Marcos Rojo, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly are close to their first-team comebacks after their respective injuries but the derby will definitely come too soon for them.

As such, Phil Jones is definitely the immediate replacement for Maguire at the heart of the defence and his presence does not exude any confidence to the backline, given his average displays over the past 18 months.

Maguire was impressive against Wolves with four tackles, three interceptions and four aerial duels won (whoscored) and the fans will be hoping that he can prove his fitness ahead of Tuesday night’s clash.
