Oldham Athletic have announced they will be launching a brand new women’s academy programme. The full-time set up will offer professional football training while simultaneously supporting and facilitating academic qualifications. The programme is due to come into effect at the start of the 2024/25 season.

The programme, completely funded by Oldham, aims to encourage its participants to achieve an NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity. On top of this, the course will be lead exclusively by coaches already working professionally in the women’s game.

A pathway will be clearly outlined for the youngsters into the Latics’ senior team too. Free kit, including boots, will also be made available to the players, making it accessible to all monetary backgrounds.

Oldham have also hired a new Female Development Officer in the form of Holly Espie. The Manchester United coach will oversee the project as Oldham announce the coming of a ‘new dawn’ at the club for women’s football.

Espie comes with good pedigree in the women’s game. She is a UEFA A licensed coach and has held roles at Blackburn Rovers, alongside a role with the Jill Scott Academy in Manchester.

“This is not only a chance for young women to showcase their footballing talent, but also to be part of a professional football club, both on and off the pitch,” the club’s official statement read.
