Former Torino and Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna reveals he wanted to play with Paolo Maldini and Lilian Thuram and insists Italy is a country ‘with short memory.’

The 36-year-old defender spoke about the state of Italian football and Serie A and an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport on Monday.

“I haven’t been in Italy for nine years, but I don’t see such a big gap,” the defender said when asked about the gap between Serie A and Premier League.

“There is a difference, but it is not as big as you say.”

Both Italy and England finished EURO 2024 with regrets, although for different reasons.

“I can’t say what happened [to England]. To me, they spoke too much about the coach,” noted Ogbonna.

“At the end of the day, the players go on the pitch. Italy is a country with a short memory, I am sure we’ll get back on track,” he added.

When asked about which defenders he wanted to play with, Ogbonna replied: “No offence to the English, but I say [Lilian] Thuram and [Paolo] Maldini.”
