Werder Bremen have finally announced their first signing of the 2025/26 season: Leeds defender Maximilian Wöber joins the Werderaner on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent next summer.
As per multiple reports, Bremen do want to sign Wöber permanently and have already lined up a four-year contract for the defender.
At 1.88 m (6'2"), the 27-year-old can play as a centre-back in a back four or three and is known for his tackling and aerial ability. After two knee surgeries last season, Wöber played only eight games for Leeds, but has since returned to form with the Austrian national team.
Wöber already played 25 matches for Borussia Mönchengladbach during the 2023/24 campaign, so he knows the German league well - this would have surely been a deciding factor for the Bremen bosses and new coach Horst Steffen.
Peter Niemeyer, Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, said: “With him [Maximilian Wöber], we’re getting an internationally experienced defender who will bring stability to our back line. We’re confident he can continue his positive development here.”
Head coach Horst Steffen added: "“Maximilian [Wöber] is tactically smart, can play centrally or on the left, and he’s tough in challenges and strong in the air.”
Wöber becomes the 15th Austrian to wear the Werder Bremen shirt and joins a group of compatriots already at the club: Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid, and Marco Grüll, who are expected to help him settle quickly.
