Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the transfer of Vitinha (22) from Braga. The Portuguese striker has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Les Phocéens.
The fee has not been disclosed, but Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported earlier today that the deal is worth over €30m. The fee breaks the club’s transfer record, which was registered when the Ligue 1 club signed Dimitri Payet in 2017. RMC Sport meanwhile report the total package to be worth €32m.
Despite considerable competition for Vitinha’s signature, the Portuguese striker has decided to join Igor Tudor’s side. According to RMC Sport, OM were impressed by Vitinha’s resolve to join Les Phocéens and have greatly increased their initial offer to sign him. Marseille were in the market for a striker following the failure to sign Nigerian international striker Terem Moffi (23) from Lorient.
Marseille reportedly trumped competition from Premier League sides Aston Villa, Brighton and Southampton by offering Braga a bid higher than Vitinha’s €30m release clause.
Vitinha compensates for the departures of Luís Suarez to Almería and Bamba Dieng to FC Lorient, both of whom departed the Vélodrome this month.
