Manchester United have officially confirmed Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli on the club’s website.

A loan with an obligation clause

After a protracted negotiation between the two sides, an agreement was finally struck last week for Hojlund – with official confirmation coming just hours before the summer transfer window slammed shut at 7pm this evening.

Napoli pivoted towards the Denmark international as an option late in the window after a serious injury to first-choice frontman Romelu Lukaku, with the former United star ruled out until November.

The 22-year-old striker will join the Italian side on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy which is triggered by “certain conditions.” Napoli will pay a £5.2 million fee for the loan with the buy clause worth £38m.

It is activated if the the Partenopei qualify for next season’s Champions League – a likely feat for the reigning Serie A champions.

Should Hojlund’s move to Naples become a permanent one, his contract at the Diego Armanda Maradona Stadium will contain a release clause worth £78m. United have also included a 5% sell-on clause.

Official confirmation

United confirmed Hojlund had “joined Napoli on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration” in a public release on the club’s website.

The Red Devils revealed they would “like to wish Rasmus good luck for the campaign ahead” with the Dane having already landed in Italy to finalise the move.

Napoli are likely to be one of the favourites to win Serie A as they look to defend their title under Antonio Conte. The Neapolitan side will compete in the Champions League – a competition not on offer at Old Trafford this season.

Conte is also famed for getting the best out of physical number nines, even if their technical base is sometimes limited, while Naples is a beautiful city which combines culture and football fanaticism in equal measure.

It is a great move for Hojlund at this stage of his burgeoning career after twelve months of stagnation at Old Trafford. Just look at the dramatic transformation of the last United player to swap Manchester for Naples.

Buona fortuna Rasmus!
