After the exit of Olivier Giroud at the end of last season, Milan have been on the market for a new starting striker, and they found their man in Álvaro Morata.

The 31-year-old, fresh off an incredible 2024 EURO win with the Spanish national team which he captained, today officially became a new player of the Diavolo, as confirmed by an official statement on the website of Milan:

Milan is proud to announce the signing of Álvaro Borja Morata Martín from Club Atlético de Madrid. Captain of the Spanish national team, with which he recently won the European Championship, Morata has signed with the Rossoneri until 30 June 2028, with an option to extend for an additional year.

“Born in Madrid on 23 October 1992, Álvaro spent time in the Youth Sectors of Atlético, Getafe and Real Madrid, before graduating from the latter and making his senior debut with the Blancos in December 2010. Over his career, he has played for Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid making a total of 506 appearances and scoring 172 goals. He has won two UEFA Champions League titles, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, two LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, one Supercopa de España, two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italias, two Italian Supercoppe and one FA Cup.

“The current Spanish captain has played 80 games for his national team, scoring 36 goals, and has won both the recent European Championship and the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League.

“He has chosen to wear the number 7.” Yacine Adli, who had previously worn the #7 shirt, agreed to give the number to Morata and he will wear #94 next year, should he stay.

Milan paid the €13m release clause of Morata to get him from Atlético. He is the first signing of the summer, but will certainly not be the last, as the Rossoneri are linked with moves for Strahinja Pavlović, Youssouf Fofana, Lazar Samardžić and Niclas Füllkrug among others.

It will be a while until Morata is available to coach Paulo Fonseca, as Álvaro is now on vacation following the EUROs. Serie A kicks off on August 17 with Milan taking on Torino at Stadio San Siro.
