Union Berlin have announced the signing of left-back Jérôme Roussillon, joining from VfL Wolfsburg.

The Frenchman started his career at Sochaux, followed by a move to Montpellier HSC after his previous team had been relegated to Ligue 2. The now 30-year-old demonstrated attractive qualities and engineered a move to Wolfsburg in 2018, where he has been a regular first-team player. He has only made four appearances in the Bundesliga this season, however, after an injury to his achilles tendon in summer last year.

Union Berlin, fifth in the league, sit just four points above Wolfsburg in seventh. The Berlin-based side are newcomers to the German top flight, having achieved promotion for the first time in their history in 2019. They had spent the previous decade battling in the second division – in 2022, they qualified for European football after finishing fifth last season. They will face  Ajax next month in the Europa League Play-Off, after a second-place finish in Group D.

Roussillon, with five goals and nine assists in the Bundesliga since his arrival from France (107 appearances), will hope to put injury woes behind him as Berlin look not only to qualify again for European football next season, but also to advance to the next stage of this year’s Europa League. Their opponents Ajax enter the play-offs after an early exit from the UEFA Champions League group stage, where they had come third in their group to both Napoli and Liverpool.
