VfL Wolfsburg see Paul Simonis as a candidate for the vacant head coach position. This is reported by various German sources. In addition to the Go Ahead Eagles coach, Jacob Neestrup of FC Copenhagen is also said to be in the mix.
The Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung reported on Tuesday that Neestrup was the desired candidate. RB Leipzig would also like to pry the Danish coach loose, but Wolfsburg would have an advantage because Wolfsburg’s technical director also worked with Neestrup in Copenhagen.
Sky Deutschland reported on Thursday afternoon that there have been talks between Simonis’ entourage and Wolfsburg. They also know about the interest in Neestrup, but report that the Danish coach was recently in negotiations with Leipzig. It therefore seems that Wolfsburg have narrowed down their options.
Simonis made his debut at Go Ahead Eagles last season. The coach helped guide the Deventer club to victory in the KNVB Cup, while also reaching seventh place in the Eredivisie – their best positioning since 1969.
Simonis has already attracted interest from Ajax and West Bromwich Albion, who both eventually chose a different coach. Wolfsburg finished 11th in the Bundesliga last season. Just before the end of the season, the club parted ways with Ralph Hasenhüttl.
