Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that they have completed the signing of centre-back Fabio Chiarodia from Werder Bremen.
The 18-year-old joins the club for a reported fee of €2m while signing a contract at die Fohlen until 2027. Several clubs from Italy were interested in Chiarodia as well as Borussia Dortmund. On his move to Gladbach, Chiarodia said: “I’m looking forward to playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach. I would like to do my best for this great traditional association and develop myself further in the process. The club is very familiar and I think that the overall package suits me very well – both as a human being and as a footballer.”
Sporting director Roland Virkus also commented on the Italian’s arrival: “Fabio Chiarodia is one of the greatest talents in his position in Germany. He showed how far he is for his age, not least in the game against us in the BORUSSIA-PARK. We are convinced that we will enjoy him a lot.”
Chiarodia played four times for Werder Bremen’s senior team last season, once in the DFB-Pokal while the other three were in the Bundesliga. The 18-year-old made two brief appearances off of the bench against Bochum and Freiburg before making his first Bundesliga start away at Gladbach in March.
This is Gladbach’s fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Lukas Ullrich (Hertha Berlin), Grant-Leon Ranos (Bayern Munich), and Robin Hack (Arminia Bielefeld) while the loan of Julian Weigl from Benfica was also made permanent.
It is clear the direction that Borussia Mönchengladbach are now going is with investing in young players, as Chiarodia is the third player under the age of 21 to arrive at Gladbach this summer.
