The FC Barcelona trio of Fermin Lopez, Pau Cubarsi, and Eric Garcia have won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics after Spain defeated host nation France in the Men’s Football finals today in an eight-goal thriller.
La Roja have been the team to beat at the Olympics with Santi Denia’s men cruising to the knockouts after beating Uzbekistan and Dominican Republic in Group C, although they did lose to Egypt in their final group match.
Santi Denia’s men then defeated Japan in the quarter-finals before seeing off a stiff challenge from Morocco in the semi-finals to set up a final date against Thierry Henry’s France.
Spain were off to a disastrous start as France took the lead just 11 minutes into the game but fought their way back thanks to a quickfire brace from Barcelona’s very own Fermin Lopez.

The 21-year-old netted twice in under eight minutes to make it 2-1 by the 25th minute before Alex Baena added a third not long after to put the European champions in the driving seat.
France, though, pulled a goal back with a little over ten minutes left to be played, before equalising in stoppage time to force the game into extra time.
Ten minutes into the extended period, Sergio Camello scored to make it 4-3 for Spain before scoring his second in the 120th minute to kill off the game.
Fermin Lopez finished as the top scorer with six goals from six games for Spain and was the leading light in the team’s gold medal. He, along with Baena, joins the list of very few players to have won the Euros and the Olympics in the same summer.
Cubarsi had a slow start but grew in stature with each game, forming a fairly solid partnership with fellow Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.
