FC Barcelona sporting director Deco has focused on contract renewals this summer, securing new deals for Raphinha and Lamine Yamal so far.
More contract renewals are expected to be in line for the Catalan club, with the likes of Jules Kounde, Frenkie de Jong, and Eric Garcia all in line for a new deal to extend their stays.
One thing that stuck out when Raphinha put pen to paper on a new contract earlier this summer was the fact that he only extended his deal until 2028. That was a mere one-year extension on his previous deal.
Now, in an interview with SPORT, the Brazilian winger was asked why he opted for a shorter extension, as opposed to his teammates, who seem to be renewing until 2030.. His response was both honest and self-aware:
Honestly, if the club is happy with me, I’ll stay here as long as I can. Of course, if I see that I’m not performing at my best or not contributing enough, I’ll also know it’s time to leave. But for now, I think I’m doing well—physically and tactically. We’ll see what happens, but like I said, if I’m doing well and the club wants me here, I’ll keep giving my all.
Raphinha has always seemed like a player who has worn the club’s badge on his sleeve. He plays football with a sense of passion for Barcelona that is only seen in La Masia graduates.
The Brazilian is very content at the club. He is one of the club captains at Barcelona, and he continues to be indispensable for Hansi Flick. Thus, there is no reason to doubt his intentions over the short-term renewal.
Raphinha seems very aware of his own abilities and is careful not to overstay his welcome at the club. Physically, only he knows how he truly feels as he gradually approaches his 30s.
The 28-year-old’s game depends a lot on high-intensity running and pressing from the front. While he is able to do it with some conviction currently, it is bound to take a piece out of him in the long run.
Thus, it makes sense that Raphinha wants to take it season after season. Should he still feel in a good place and Barcelona still want to retain him, an extension could take place in the future.
Right now, it’s time to focus on the present, and Raphinha will be keen to win everything possible with Barcelona in the 2025/26 season.
