Burnley are still prioritising the signing of a striker in January despite recent defensive departures, according to yesterday’s report from Lancs Live.

The Clarets are yet to make a signing this month – but have already seen two senior players depart with Kevin Long moving to Birmingham City and Matt Lowton securing a loan switch to Huddersfield Town.

These departures come as no real surprise considering the fact Alan Nixon reported in the summer that Vincent Kompany was prepared to let the duo leave, though no moves for the pair materialised during the previous window with neither having a real chance to put themselves in the shop window.

Quiz: Can you name which club Burnley FC signed these 22 players from?

Although the Lancashire outfit are already covered at right-back with summer signing Vitinho able to push Connor Roberts for a starting spot, they will have a real shortage of centre-backs next season as things stand.

CJ Egan-Riley may be keen to go out on loan if he fails to win more game time at Turf Moor, Charlie Taylor could be allowed to leave if a “sizeable” offer is made for him and loanees Jordan Beyer and Taylor Harwood-Bellis aren’t guaranteed to be at the club next season.

The Verdict:

They should definitely be looking at bringing in a new forward even though they currently have the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Ashley Barnes and Halil Dervisoglu at their disposal.

There’s every chance Dervisoglu will leave this month after failing to make a real impact and if that happens, recruiting a striker will be essential.

Even if he doesn’t depart, they need a longer-term alternative to Rodriguez and Barnes who are coming towards the latter stages of their career and January could be the ideal time for a new man to come in.

If a new striker did arrive, that would give them around six or seven months to become accustomed to life at Turf Moor before potentially taking on the challenge of playing in the Premier League.

Not only do they need to sign someone who’s reasonably young – but they also need to bring someone in who’s ready to play regularly in the top flight. Whether Surridge can do that remains to be seen – because he hasn’t made a real impact for Forest this season.

Whoever comes in needs to be a permanent signing though – because they already have plenty of loanees on their books.
