Ajax are in a state of turmoil at the moment following a string of poor performances and the sacking of head coach Alfred Schreuder.
The boss was let go from his position after the Eredivisie giants drew 1-1 with relegation-zone Volendam on Thursday despite having 31 shots to two. It was the club’s sixth consecutive draw and seventh Eredivisie game without a win, leaving them fifth in the table.
Following Schreuder’s departure, club captain Dušan Tadić has urged the squad to claim responsibility for their role in his sacking.
“I am ashamed and feel responsible for the coach’s dismissal,” he said.
“All players must feel responsible. We failed in the field. We don’t win for the umpteenth time. That is not possible and not allowed at Ajax.
“Then the trainer will automatically be looked at. That’s how it works in football, but I think we should all look in the mirror.”
Ajax returned to training on Friday, with Jong Ajax manager John Heitinga in charge of the group.
No official decision has been made regarding who will be in charge against Excelsior on Sunday, but multiple Dutch reports suggest it will be the 39-year-old on the bench.
