Lautaro Martinez has been named as Inter Milan’s outstanding performer against Roma – and not just for his decisive goal.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, laud the Argentine as the Nerazzurri’s man of the match.
Yesterday was never going to be an easy match for Inter.
Playing away to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico is always tough. And the Giallorossi were ready to give Inter a real physical battle.
Therefore, it was not a match that saw a great deal of flashy attacking football and goalscoring chances.
There was plenty of great last-ditch defending and excellent goalkeeping at both ends of the pitch.
And there were also quite a few fouls from both sets of players. That set a scrappy tone for the encounter, with many stoppages in play and disruptions to the tempo.
There were a few potential match-winners in both teams. They just needed someone to step up.
And for Inter, it was Martinez who made the difference in the end.
Martinez scored right around the hour mark.
Inter benefited quite a bit from some disastrous defending in transition from Roma, who allowed a counterattack straight from a corner.
But there was still plenty of work for the Inter captain to do. And Martinez took his effort with familiar pace and accuracy to beat Giallorossi keeper Mile Svilar.
This was Martinez’s third goal in Serie A this season, and his fourth overall for Inter.
That was the decisive moment in the match. But it was far from the only important contribution from Martinez.
The 27-year-old showed why he wears the captain’s armband for Inter.
Martinez recognized the kind of match that yesterday was going to be.
And as is so often the case, the Argentine set the tone for Inter’s performance with his defensive workrate and physicality.
It was not the most eye-catching of performance from Martinez or from Inter. But it got the job done perfectly.
