FLW takes a look at a couple of things that Millwall will not want to happen before the end of the summer transfer window.
Millwall head coach Neil Harris still has work to do on his squad before the end of the summer transfer window, as he looks to build on his impressive work during the back end of last season.
The Lions' boss was re-appointed in February with the club in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle in the Championship. He delivered eight wins from his 13 games in charge, steering his side up the table and leaving any concerns about dropping out of the division as a distant memory.
The 47-year-old has made a few key additions to his squad so far this summer, including striker Macauley Langstaff from Notts County, defender Japhet Tanganga on a free transfer from Tottenham Hotspur, and goalkeeper Lukas Jensen from Lincoln City.
However, Harris knows that there needs to be further incomings before the end of the transfer window if Millwall are going to have enough quality, and strength in depth, to push on and compete in the top half of the Championship during the 2024/25 campaign. West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby is one player who has been linked with a move to The Den.
Let's take a look at a couple of things that the Lions must avoid over the next few weeks.
Harris has identified that signing another forward option is a priority for Millwall. The Lions' current striking options include Langstaff, Kevin Nisbet and Tom Bradshaw, and considering they played with two strikers under Harris last season, they could do with bringing in another player to strengthen in that area of the pitch.
Zian Flemming will miss the start of the season, which kicks off with an opening day clash against Watford at The Den, with a calf injury, making it even more important that another creative player is signed as soon as possible.
Harris discussed the situation in an interview with the South London Press, stating that he must be patient as he looks to complete his business before the transfer deadline at the end of August.
"In an ideal world we'd have added two players at the top end of the pitch," said Harris.
"Not just to support the starting eleven but to support options coming off the bench.
"Missing players at the moment just highlights the fact we know we need to recruit for the group.
"As head coach I have to be patient and accept that we are going to get business done before August 31 when the deadline comes."
It is clear that Millwall must avoid a scenario where they do not bring in the necessary reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window.
Millwall signed defender Wes Harding last summer, and he featured regularly during the 2023/24 season prior to the arrival of Harris, after which he did not feature once for the Lions.
Therefore, it is not a huge surprise that he has made it clear he wants to play first-team football next season. However, following the permanent signing of Tanganga, the return of Shaun Hutchinson and the quality of Jake Cooper, regular minutes may be hard to come by for him at The Den next season.
The 27-year-old attracted interest from Wrexham earlier in the summer, and it is unlikely that he would be short of other potential suitors if he was made available, but Millwall cannot afford to let him go unless they have a replacement lined up.
Losing Harding without suitably replacing him is another transfer scenario that Millwall must avoid before the end of the summer transfer window.
