Tom Cleverley has spoken out on Plymouth Argyle's transfer business
Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley has provided an update regarding the club’s remaining transfer business.
The Pilgrims have made 10 additions so far this summer, with the likes of Aribim Pepple, Bradley Ibrahim and Jamie Paterson now operating out of Home Park.
These signings haven’t helped Argyle start the season on the front foot however, losing their opening two League One fixtures against Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers.
Some salvation was provided by a 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers in the EFL Cup, but Cleverley hasn’t started life at Plymouth how he would’ve hoped.
Naturally, this has led to questions surrounding the competitiveness of the Pilgrims’ squad and whether it has enough quality to compete at the sharp end of the third-tier.
Cleverley has now commented on the club’s transfer plans before the window slams shut on September 1.
There is still some time for Plymouth to make some new additions after their less-than-impressive start to the year.
Argyle’s boss has insisted that the club are working tirelessly to get whatever business they can done before the window slams shut.
"With these double game weeks, it's more for the recruitment to get working on those, because I've got a team to prepare,” commented Cleverley via Plymouth Argyle’s media channels.
"The majority of business gets done early, or in the last week. We're in that no man's land, where there's a stalemate between clubs, but we're working hard."
Argyle’s boss also alluded to some current negotiations the club are involved in surrounding a potential new striker.
"Waiting to hear back,” stated Cleverley. “We've got plans in place and I'm in constant communication with the recruitment team, and we know where we need to strengthen, but my focus is on three important games coming up."
Xavier Amaechi, Caleb Watts and Pepple have all played up front for the Pilgrims so far this season, but have only scored a single goal between them, which explains why Cleverley is keen to add some fresh blood in that area.
Spirits were high around Home Park ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with a new, young manager in the dugout and a raft of fresh signings.
There was a real sense that Argyle could fight up at the top of League One immediately to try and reclaim their place in the Championship.
However, it has been a nightmare start for the Pilgrims, looking uncompetitive and more likely to face a battle at the bottom of League One instead of chasing promotion.
Therefore, it is imperative that they get some more additions over the line, who can change their fortunes.
There is obvious talent within their ranks, but it may take multiple signings to replace the output lost by the likes of Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu.
Argyle have been linked with a move for Fleetwood Town’s Ryan Graydon, as per Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, which could help towards resolving their problems up top.
They must address this situation in the final weeks by recruiting some reliable goalscorers, otherwise it could be a long season for Cleverley and Co. on their return to the third-tier.
