The suspense is over: Nico Williams has decided to stay at Bilbao. The 22-year-old Spanish international has officially extended his contract with Athletic Club de Bilbao until 2035—an exceptional ten-year deal.
He was heavily pursued by FC Barcelona, who even appeared to have reached an agreement for a future contract, but in the end, the player followed his heart. In a statement released by the club, Nico Williams made his feelings clear:
When it comes time to make a decision, the heart weighs the most. I am where I want to be, with my people, in my city.
The European champion with Spain now has a release clause set at €90 million. After notching up 5 goals and 5 assists in La Liga last season, Nico Williams has once again demonstrated his commitment to Athletic, where he has become a cornerstone of the Basque side's setup.
