Neymar Wanting an Extension Could Foreshadow Mbappé’s Desire to Stay at PSG

If you believe recent reports, Neymar Jr. wants to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain and that could mean another superstar intends to stay in the French capital as well.

While retaining a player of Neymar’s ability and marketability is essential for a club like PSG, he’s not the priority. That distinction belongs to Kylian Mbappé, the 21-year-old phenom who is the face of French football and highly regarded as the best young player in the game today.

Both Neymar and Mbappé are on contracts that expire at the end of the 2021-22 season and those who use any of the sites at the top of the list of mobile casinos online in Ireland will be watching to see what they do. If a deal isn’t done this season, both could leave for much less than their market value, which is likely already depleted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial impact it has had on the biggest football clubs.

For example, it’s no secret that FC Barcelona would love nothing more than to bring Neymar back to Spain. In fact, during the summer of 2019, they almost pulled it off but they simply couldn’t meet PSG’s asking price. Now that Barca are in even more dire financial straits, pulling off a Neymar transfer is practically impossible and why he is likely angling for a new deal at PSG.

This could also be the situation for Mbappé. Before the pandemic, it was reported that Real Madrid would be willing to spend half a billion dollars to sign the Frenchman. Given his ability and popularity (he is on the cover of the latest FIFA video game), that record-breaking transfer fee wouldn’t be too far off his value. Now, there’s no way Real Madrid can afford Mbappé with that pricetag.

Now, there are two options. Mbappé could go the Neymar route and sign an extension, for two years perhaps, and receive a substantial wage increase. Or, he can refuse and force PSG to either sell next summer for a reduced fee or, keep their superstar for the duration of his contract and let him leave on a free transfer—hardly the ideal option given PSG’s own financial issues brought on during the pandemic.

It’s a delicate situation that could be made easier if Mbappé and his representatives express their desires clearly to Leonardo, PSG’s sporting director. If an extension is possible, I believe PSG will find the money to get the deal done. If Mbappé is ready to move on to a new adventure, he should let that be known so that Leonardo can find the best transfer possible that either net a large transfer fee, or, brings in quality players (or both).

With Neymar likely staying at PSG, Mbappé may want to continue playing with his friend and see if they can bring a UEFA Champions League trophy to Paris, an accomplishment that would far exceed anything at Real Madrid.
