Matty Longstaff could be inching closer to a move away from Newcastle United after a report that the midfielder has received an offer from a undisclosed European club.

The England U20 international’s contract with the Magpies expires in the summer.

Longstaff was subject to an offer from Manchester United last summer, but the Red Devils’ approach was rebuffed.

Since then, the 19-year-old midfielder has been linked with Inter Milan and Marseille, and now this third club from the continent has entered the equation.

Newcastle have remained positive about the prospects of getting the boyhood Newcastle fan to remain on Tyneside, but no substantive talks with Longstaff are planned.

His older brother, Sean, is also on the books at St James’ Park.

However, with two years left on Sean’s current deal, there is less pressure to open contract renewal negotiations with him.

Newcastle may be banking on the emotional bond with the club holding sway, but that would be playing a dangerous game.

The Toon faithful will be livid if such a bright local prospect is allowed leave the club for nothing in a few months’ time.
