Mike Ashley had refused to allow any real help to the Newcastle United Women.

As with the rest of Newcastle United, investment sadly lacking , indeed, the women’s set-up kept at arm’s length and not a fully integrated part of the football club.

Credit to the Newcastle United owners who have now sparked that dream for all young women and girls, that one day they might play for THEIR club at the very highest level of women’s football.

Only two and a half years after the takeover, the lack of investment, care and attention and interest that was so lacking under Mike Ashley, has seen a 180 degree change, with already a move up from fourth tier football to now second tier next season.

This next step up to the Super League will of course be the most difficult of all, however, we can be sure that the Newcastle United owners will be doing everything they can to provide the platform for a potential third promotion in a row. Certainly, I think we can expect a significant influx of players before next season kicks off, on top of those who have arrived during this most recent promotion push.

Crystal Palace Women are the ones who won the second tier (Championship) this season and will be playing in the Super League next season.

Still in the second tier though are Sunderland and Durham, so some derby matches as well for the Newcastle United Women to look forward to next season.

One game to go of this current third tier season, Newcastle United Women are eight points clear with just West Brom away to play on Sunday:

Newcastle United official announcement:

Newcastle United Women’s promotion to the Barclays Women’s Championship has been formally approved by the Football Association after the club received its licence for the second tier.

Becky Langley’s side beat Huddersfield Town 10-0 last Sunday to secure the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title and immediately commenced a comprehensive application process.

The FA has now ratified that application and has confirmed Newcastle United Women’s place in the competition for the 2024/25 season.

Darren Eales, CEO at Newcastle United, said: “We are delighted to receive a formal licence for Newcastle United Women to compete in the Barclays Women’s Championship next season.

“Becoming a full-time professional club last summer was an important building block in our ambitions for Newcastle United Women, and this licence recognises our commitment to the highest standards.
