Newcastle United want to sign Mahamadou Doumbia

Newcastle United have identified Malian international midfielder Mahamadou Doumbia as a prime summer target, with manager Eddie Howe reportedly impressed by the 21-year-old Antwerp playmaker. The Magpies are preparing to activate his €20 million release clause after the youngster's breakthrough season in Belgium, where his spectacular goals and all-action performances drew comparisons to Ivorian legend Yaya Touré.

Despite having two years remaining on his contract, Doumbia has become one of Europe's most sought-after talents following a campaign that yielded 3 goals and 2 assists in 34 appearances. Juventus, Napoli, Sevilla and several Premier League rivals including Brighton and Everton have all registered interest, while Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray remain in the mix. Newcastle have already initiated contact with the player's representatives, hoping to fend off competition for a midfielder whose powerful strikes and technical quality have made him the new darling of the Bosuilstadion.
