In a recent report, De Telegraaf revealed that Newcastle United are eager to sign Juventus defender Dean Huijsen, who is currently playing on loan at AS Roma. However, it is believed that the Magpies could face competition in the form of Borussia Dortmund in the race to land the Spanish centre-back.

Huijsen’s Impressive Loan Spell At Roma

The 18-year-old is having a promising loan spell at Roma after putting in a handful of solid performances defensively in Serie A. Huijsen has found the back of the net two times and earned one assist in 12 matches for the Italian club in Serie A.

The Amsterdam-born talent has made most of his appearances off the bench which explains why he is averaging 0.6 tackles, 0.3 interceptions and 2.0 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 85.6% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).

His current deal at his parent club Juventus will expire in 2028. Thus, the Magpies would find it tough to land him on the cheap at the end of this campaign.

Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Go For Huijsen?

Huijsen is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed and can play his way out from the back. Standing at 1.97m, the Spanish sensation is a towering presence inside his half but is still quite inexperienced and would need more time to prove his worth at the highest level.

We can expect Huijsen to inject some quality into Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s defence. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at St. James’ Park next season. At 18, Huijsen has the potential to become one of the best players in his position someday.

At the moment, Huijsen is enjoying his loan spell at Roma. However, there are some question marks over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football if the Tyneside club manage to snap him up in the summer transfer window.
