In a recent report, Argentine news outlet TNT Sports claimed that Newcastle United are among the clubs hoping to sign Bayer 04 Leverkusen ace Exequiel Palacios. It has been stated that the Magpies could face competition in the form of Aston Villa and Manchester City in pursuit of the Argentine midfielder next year.

Palacios’ Impressive Run Of Form In The Bundesliga

Palacios is having a decent campaign at the German club after he put in a series of impressive performances at the heart of their midfield. The South American sensation has found the back of the net twice and picked up a couple of assists in 12 matches for Leverkusen this season in various competitions.

The 25-year-old has been a positive influence in both halves based on his average of 2.2 tackles, 2.0 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 0.7 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 91.9% of his attempted passes in the German top-flight (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the German club will expire in the summer of 2028. Therefore, the Magpies will have to launch a big move if they want to sign Palacios next year.

Is Palacios A Decent Fit For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?

Palacios is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear his lines when required and has also got the vision to orchestrate a few decent chances in the final third.

The Argentine talent can shoot the ball purely and with venom from long range. He is an energetic dribbler with the ball as well.

Palacios is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also function as a holding midfielder or as an attacking midfielder if told to do so.

Palacios would be an excellent addition to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s squad as he has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park. At 25, the Argentine’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a good fit for Newcastle‘s needs at the moment.
